Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software?including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%\debug folder.

Microsoft releases an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month, and as needed to respond to security incidents. You can run the tool from this Web page anytime or download it to your computer.

Our test

It doesn’t seem to have an interface. You run it and then a window pops up saying if it removed or found anything. This tool quickly gets rid of most virus, worms or Trojan horses. It’s free!

It only targets certain worms and malware. You obviously need more protection that JUST this program. Antivirus, antispyware, etc.
